Mucus membranes are the physical expression of an incredibly receptive and sometimes vulnerable part of our selves. It is a place where our senses can become heightened and communicate directly and deeply with the heart. Those parts of our insides that open to the outer world are so closely linked with the opening and closing of the heart and the profound yet simple way of its nature. Think of a kiss, sexual experiences, imagine being in the womb. All of these things involve the most delicate of tissue and can warm the heart in a way that radiates out.
Now I think of the delicateness of the situation. I think about how societal conditioning make us feel shameful of these things and the demons this creates. Stemming I can imagine from the profundity of information received through these areas. I am brought back now to the state of the mucus membrane within our bodies. Why they get into trouble can often be directly linked to this matter. When we feel unsafe or like we need to overprotect a part of ourselves it stems from this matter of the heart. We create excessive mucus that congeals and becomes damp and hot within this part of the body. It is like a blanket or a dark cave which we feel safe to hide in and retreat to. Because we are fearful we cut ourselves off and in so doing lose direction from our heart.
With phlegm we also become heavy and weighed down. This can lead to lethargy and depression. The excessive damp and stagnant environment attracts microbes of many sorts which seek to break down and dissolve the situation as a symbiotic expression of nature. It can become a swampy, inflamed, and irritated place where it is painful to feel at all. What can be useful here is a visual for the nature of water. Think of a river gently flowing through this area. How all things come and go and find just the right place at the right time to reach the shore. Then think of the propensity to hide excessively in a cave of your problems, how the waste you create remains there with you and how helping forces can not reach you. Then think of the river again, maybe just a small stream finds you there and begins to wash through this place in a helpful manner.
